The One Person Who’s Almost Always Missing
If you scroll through your phone right now, you’ll probably find hundreds of photos of your children.
Milestones. Birthdays. Random everyday moments.
Your partner with the kids. Your baby sleeping. First smiles.
But how many of those photos actually include you?
For most moms, it’s very few.
You’re the one taking the photos.
You’re the one making sure everything is captured.
And somehow, you’re not in the memories you’re working so hard to keep.
“I’ll Do It When I Feel More Ready”
I hear this all the time from moms who visit my Durban studio.
“I just want to lose a bit of weight first…..I don’t feel like myself yet….. Let me just get through this stage.”
And honestly, I get it, but here’s the part I gently say to my clients all the time.
There will always be a reason to wait.
Life doesn’t suddenly become calm, there is always something going on.
What Your Children Actually See
Your children are not looking at you the way you look at yourself.
They’re not noticing the things you’re worried about, and they’re not thinking about what you look like in a photo.
They just see their mom.
The one who holds them, the one who comforts them, the one who is always there… and if you ask my daughter, her favorite photos of me are the ones where I look happy!
That’s what they will remember.
A Moment I See So Often
I had a mom recently in my Pinetown studio who booked a session and told me she only wanted photos of her baby, she kept saying she wasn’t ready to be in the photos.
Right at the end, I asked her to just step in for a few quick photos with her little one. Nothing complicated, I told her that if she did not like them, she did not have to choose them from the gallery.
Her baby immediately settled into her. Rested against her chest like that’s the safest place in the world.
Those ended up being her favourite images.
She messaged me afterwards and said she almost missed being in that stage of her baby’s life completely.
I see versions of this all the time with Durban moms.
What Happens During a Session
Moms often arrive a bit stressed. Especially with everything going on in day-to-day life. School runs, routines, trying to get out the house on time with a baby. Often times the newborn session is the first time a lot of parents are taking their little babies out of the house.
Worried about whether baby will behave – my reply, don’t stress – I’ve got this!
Worried about how they look – Your children love you just as you are; plus, the photos will be edited.
Worried about everything going perfectly.
But once we start, something shifts.
The baby just wants mom.
Toddlers cling to mom.
Everything naturally comes back to that connection.
Those are the moments that matter.
Not perfect posing. Not perfection. Just real connection.

There’s No Perfect Time
This is the honest part, there is no perfect time to do family photos.
Babies grow quickly.
Phases change before you realise it.
What feels like a long stage right now passes so fast.
Waiting often means it just doesn’t happen.
I see so many moms across Durban who wish they had done it sooner, they regret not being in more photos with loved ones who have since passed, or when their babies were so very little.
👉 This is especially true for newborns, where that early stage passes so quickly.

This Is Your Sign
If you’ve been thinking about doing a photoshoot but keep putting it off, this is your sign.
Not because everything is perfect.
But because this is your life right now, and every phase deserves to be celebrated!
And you deserve to be part of those memories.
One day, these photos won’t just be for you, they’ll be for your children, they are your legacy.
