Thinking about booking Christmas photos with your little ones, but wondering whether they’ll sit still, smile or enjoy the experience? A little preparation can help you feel more relaxed—and your children don’t need to be perfectly behaved for you to have beautiful family photographs.

The end of the year has a way of filling up before we’ve quite caught our breath. There are school events, work deadlines, holiday plans and all the little things we hoped to finish before December.

With so much happening, even the things we look forward to can become another item on the list.

But somewhere in between all the planning, it’s lovely to leave a little room to enjoy our children. To listen to their excited chatter, share a laugh and spend time together while they’re still this small.

That’s part of what makes Christmas family photos special to me. Along with photographs to treasure, they’re a chance to pause and mark this season of your family’s life.

If you’re considering a Christmas mini session, here are a few things to keep in mind.

What if my child won’t cooperate for Christmas photos?

One of the worries parents sometimes have before family photos is whether their children will cooperate.

Will they smile? Will they feel shy? Will they suddenly decide that being photographed is the last thing they want to do?

Little ones have their own feelings, energy and ideas, and that’s completely normal. You don’t need to arrive with children who can sit still and smile on command.

A cuddle, a curious expression or a giggle shared with you can make a beautiful photograph. Those small moments often feel especially familiar when you look back at them later.

Perfectly posed portraits are very rare when there are toddlers involved, the best practice is to engage them in play, that way we can capture the real emotions, and family connection, instead of that overly rehearsed plastic pre-school photo smile – we all know that one right? lol

How to prepare little ones for a Christmas photo session

Getting everyone dressed and out of the house can feel like an achievement all on its own.

Where possible, leave a little breathing room before your session so that you’re not arriving straight from a rush. Choose comfortable outfits, make sure little tummies are full, and bring along a familiar comfort item if your child needs one.

Another important consideration with little ones is to avoid scheduling their session during their usual nap time. With only 20 minutes available for a mini session that can make quite a difference.

When talking about the session beforehand, keep it simple and cheerful. “We’re going to have some Christmas photos together” is enough. There’s no need to make it a big performance they have to get right.

And if the day doesn’t go quite to plan, take a breath. You can still have lovely moments together.

Helping your child feel comfortable during family photos

For a little child, being somewhere unfamiliar can feel much easier with a parent close by.

Holding hands, sitting together or offering a cuddle gives them something familiar to settle into. It also creates the kind of connection that makes family photographs meaningful.

You don’t have to spend the whole session reminding them to smile. Enjoy them. Look at their little faces, make them laugh and let yourself be in the moment, too.

Making time for family during the festive season

Family time doesn’t always need a whole free weekend or an elaborate outing. Sometimes it starts with setting aside a little time and giving each other your attention.

A Christmas photo session can be one of those moments. You’ve made the effort to be together, and for a little while there’s space to hold your children close and enjoy who they are right now.

The photographs become a reminder of that time: the child who still fits comfortably on your hip, the missing front teeth, the siblings who make each other laugh.

These details change quietly from year to year. It’s lovely to have a record of them.

Christmas family photos as a yearly tradition

Every family celebrates differently. Around Christmas, or whichever special holidays your family observes, it’s often the familiar little rituals that everyone looks forward to.

Perhaps it’s decorating together, baking something special, sharing a meal or bringing out the same much-loved decorations each year.

Traditions give us something to return to. For children, they can become part of what makes a holiday feel like their own: something familiar, shared with the people they love.

Christmas photographs can become one of those traditions, too. Looking back through them each year lets you see how your family has grown—and remember all the little things you might otherwise have forgotten.

There’s no need to create a perfect festive season. Choose the traditions that bring your family joy, and leave room to enjoy them.

When should you book your Christmas mini session?

December calendars fill up so quickly. Booking your Christmas photos a little earlier gives you one less thing to squeeze into those busy weeks—and more time to enjoy your photographs before Christmas.

If you’re choosing between my 2026 Christmas mini session dates, 21 November and 28 November are lovely options. While the 5 December date has attracted lots of interest, a November session gives you more breathing room, especially if you’d love to use your photographs for Christmas cards or printed gifts for family.

If you have cards or gifts in mind, let’s chat about photo delivery and printing times when you book so we can plan ahead.

It’s a small bit of preparation that can help the festive season feel a little less rushed.
