One of the most common questions I get from expecting moms is:
“When should I book my maternity photoshoot?”
And it’s such a good question, because timing really does make a difference in how your photos turn out and how comfortable you feel during your session.
The ideal time for your maternity session
The sweet spot for maternity photos is usually between 28 and 34 weeks.
At this stage:
- Your belly has a beautiful, round shape
- You’re still relatively comfortable moving and posing
- We have a bit of flexibility before baby decides to arrive early
Every pregnancy is different, but this window tends to be the most flattering and the most comfortable for most moms.

What if I feel like my belly is too small?
This is something I hear often, especially from first-time moms.
The truth is, your belly doesn’t need to be “huge” to photograph beautifully. With the right posing, lighting, and dresses, we can highlight your shape in a very soft and flattering way.
Sometimes a slightly smaller bump actually photographs incredibly elegantly.
What if I feel like I’m carrying extra weight?
Also very normal, and something I am very mindful of during sessions.
Pregnancy changes your body, and not always in ways you feel confident about. That’s where my experience comes in.
I guide you into poses that:
- flatter your shape
- elongate your body
- highlight your bump in the most beautiful way
I also offer a selection of maternity dresses that are designed specifically for photoshoots and help create that soft, “magazine-style” look.
What about editing?
My approach to editing is always guided by you.
Some clients prefer a very natural look, where we keep everything true to life. Others prefer a more polished, refined finish.
I will always:
- remove temporary blemishes
- soften where needed
- ensure you look your best
But I don’t believe in completely changing how someone looks. These images are part of your story, and one day you’ll look back and remember exactly what this season felt like.
Why maternity photos are so special
It’s easy to feel unsure during pregnancy. Your body is changing, you’re tired, and you may not always feel like yourself.
But this is also such a meaningful time.
You are growing a little human. Your body is doing something incredible.
And once baby arrives, everything shifts. Life becomes busy, full, and beautiful in a completely different way.
These photos become a way to remember:
- the anticipation
- the connection
- the quiet moments before everything changes
These images also become something incredibly special for your child one day.
To be able to look back and see what their mom looked like while carrying them, to see that connection before they were even born, is something truly meaningful.
It becomes part of your family’s story. A legacy they can one day look back on and even share with their own children.
What to expect from your maternity session
My maternity sessions take place in my air conditioned studio in Cowies Hill, Durban, where everything is set up to feel calm, comfortable, and unhurried.
Most sessions are done on weekdays, which allows for a more relaxed experience without feeling rushed. If you’d like, you can also have your makeup done in studio before your session.
This is especially helpful in Durban’s warmer weather, as you don’t need to worry about traveling in the heat after having your makeup done. You can arrive, settle in, and ease into your session feeling your best.
For clients who are only available on weekends, I do offer a limited number of Saturday afternoon sessions. This works well if your partner is unable to take time off work, or if you have older children who are at school during the week.
I also have a curated selection of maternity dresses available in studio, so you don’t need to worry about sourcing something yourself.

When should I book?
I always recommend booking your maternity session during your second trimester, especially if you’d like a specific date or access to certain dresses.
Sessions are limited, particularly the Saturday slots, so booking early helps secure your spot in that ideal 28–34 week window.
